'No Parking' Signs Coming Down in Village Shopping Center

Talks on how to solve the borough's downtown parking problem continue, says Borough Council member Gary Kapner.

New Providence's parking controversy may be coming to an end. The owner of the Village Shopping Center, Urstadt Biddle Properties, Inc., is taking down "No Parking" signs that earned criticism from business owners and local government last month, The Alternative Press reported.

Borough Council member Gary Kapner told the publication that Urstadt Biddle's move to bring the signs down is a "gesture of good will" and "a first step," adding that it will take time to get all business owners in the area to agree on how to solve the problem of limited downtown parking once and for all.

The no-parking signs went up in June after Urstadt Biddle took ownership of the shopping center, causing consternation among merchants. Last month, Mayor J. Brooke Hern and members of the Borough Council sparred over how to deal with the parking situation.
