River Cleanup Grants Prompt Local Collaboration

Berkeley Heights working with neighbors to identify critical issues along Passaic River.

Berkeley Heights officials are confident they will be awarded a share of $3 million in DEP grant money earmarked for the Passaic River cleanup.

The township has been working with its neighbors and Union County to identify critical issues while walking the river, according to the Alternative Press. 

"The DEP is well aware that Berkeley Heights has taken the lead," township Administrator Linda Cavanaugh said

"We are proactive, we will get our share.  Our contact with the state has helped," said Mayor Joe Bruno. "We want to keep the water in the river."

A meeting was held last week with representatives from the DEP, county, Berkeley Heights, Summit, New Providence and Long Hill to identify the scope of the project.
