Springfield Vote Too Close to Call

Vote split between Democrats and Republicans; final result will depend on provisional ballots.

With all districts reporting but with provisional and email ballots unaccounted for, the race for the two contested seats on the Springfield Township Committee is split between Democrats and Republicans.

While Springfield residents preferred Obama over Romney 3,552 to 2,857, they did not show a strong preference for Democrats or Republicans in the local race.

“The difference between Obama and Romney is about 600 votes,” Committee member Marc Krauss said before the final votes were tallied. “The difference between us and them is like 100 votes.”

Democratic challenger David Barnett garnered the most votes, tailed by Incumbent Republican Jerry Fernandez Margaret Bandrowski and Marc Krauss placed third and fourth, respectively. Bandrowski is within striking distance of Fernandez in second, with only 12 points separating her from the Deputy Mayor.

The numbers, which include absentee ballots, as of 10 p.m., are below.

  • David Barnett 3173
  • Jerry Fernandez 3141
  • Margaret Bandrowski 3129
  • Marc Krauss 3020

This year’s election has been complicated by fallout from Hurricane Sandy. Residents throughout the state have voted with provisional and email ballots that will not be tallied until Friday. Representatives of both the Democratic and Republican parties said that with the race as close as it is currently, those late numbers will become major factors.

David Barnett said that he hoped that when the final votes are tallied that he would retain his lead and that his running mate would pick enough votes to get over the hump.

“I think we need to wait until all of the provisional ballots are in,” Barnett said.

annonymous amlen - caught red handed? over 10 aliases? sounds like the same line bart uses over and over dave. keep repeating the same thing over and over makes you sound crazier and crazier, doesn't make it fact. from what i've seen ziad says what he thinks and signs his name to everything. i see no reason for him to be using aliases. over 30 people well known in the community have since stepped forward and signed their name to these posts so now you resort to calling us "ziad's people". why don't you go to the next township committee meeting and defend amlen in person? stand up instead of being a coward and say what you have to say to ziad's face. you have no proof he's on here posting and i find it hard to believe he could have the time to waste on that with all he's done for springfield. easy for you to pretend to be someone other than amlen when you don't talk to the residents or show your face around town. i guess ziad was posting under your ex-wife's name too? another alias of his?

In 2012, construction began on a football (turf) field, which was sorely needed. It was an embarrasment for kids to have to use the field in a neighboring town. Plans are being put in place (early stages) to revitalize downtown, which is long overdue. These and other initiatives certainly suggest that the town has been moving in the right direction in 2012. The two years prior saw no forward movement on any important issues. Stop believing that this is some kind of actual political novel. This is a small community that has begun to move forward with smart initiatives. This is because of Shehady; not in spite of him. If these other guys are put in charge -- we will have no hoops, no power, no ideas and no initiatives. I have come to understand (having attended some TC meetings in 2012) that what you call immature/disrespectful behavior, is a smart, insightful, forward thinking and aggressive mayor trying to move town business forward without every whiner in town (who wants their voices heard) slowing down the process.

Is explaining his position, but not being willing to repeat it in response to the same question being asked over and over really the same as not listening. He listened, but he still believed that his position was the correct one. I have watched the youtube videos, which were supposed to be an example of this worst bullying, and frankly did not see anything wrong with his behavior. This pettiness is ridiculous. Ziad is trying to actually accomplish something. What are the Dems proposing to do aside from undo anything the Republicans started? I also don't get the big deal with Westfield vs Madison. What exactly does Westfield do for us that is sooooo vital that cannot be done by Madison or someone else?
