“Lucky” To Be Alive, Three-Legged Dog Now Seeks a New Home

For a one-year old shepherd mix, roaming the rural fields and woods of eastern central Georgia can be dangerous. It is believed that "Lucky" managed to catch his leg in a coyote trap.

For a one-year old shepherd mix, roaming the rural fields and woods of eastern central Georgia can be dangerous. It is believed that “Lucky” managed to catch his leg in a coyote trap and for several weeks, went without food or water.

Lucky received his name from Waynesboro, Georgia Animal Control Officer Desiree Bizzell who found him hobbling up to her door step on Friday the 13th (January 2012). Somehow, Lucky had managed to chew himself free from the trap and find his way to her. He was emaciated and the lower portion of his back left leg was hanging off.

Knowing that he would likely be put down if a donor could not be found to pay for the needed medical care, Ms. Bizzell contacted Home for Good Dog Rescue, a Waynesboro Animal Control rescue partner. Home for Good Dog Rescue agreed to pay for the surgery and medical care. The officer then brought Lucky to a local Georgia veterinarian where they amputated the left hind leg that was mostly mangled. After the surgery, Lucky stayed with Ms. Bizzell for about a month before he was transported to New Jersey.

Lucky arrived at the Home for Good office on Friday, February 17th.  He has recovered from his leg surgery, and he has gained much of his weight back. His is currently being cared for by Home for Good volunteer, Marty Dragos, who’s specialty is fostering special needs dogs.

Lucky is recovered and is now ready for his forever home.  He is learning to walk on three legs and is doing just fine. He loves other dogs, cats, and kids. Even with his disability, Lucky will make a great pet for any family. He is grateful and appreciative to those who have helped him along the way to his “forever” home.
