Berkeley Heights School District Nearing End of First Year of "Green Schools" Participation
Initiative saves township green in more ways than one.
The Berkeley Heights School District is nearing the end of its first year of participation in the New Jersey Green Schools Program, an initiative aimed at conserving energy usage in the schools while teaching about the connections between science and math and energy efficiency, environmental protection and finance.
Funded by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities’ Clean Energy Program and administered by Global Learning, Inc., the New Jersey Green Schools Program has been successfully implemented in a number of school districts statewide over the past few years.

“We are eagerly awaiting concrete data after one full year in the program, but our utility bills have gone down since our participation began,” said Donna Felezzola, School Business Administrator/Board Secretary for the Berkeley Heights School District. “Each school has established a team to develop, implement and monitor ways that staff members and students can save energy in our buildings. Additionally, on a district-wide basis, we changed the start and stop times for all building mechanical systems, replaced lights with lighting fixtures that are more energy-efficient, and installed motion-sensor lighting in certain locations.”
