School Election to be Discussed at February BOE

Moving board member elections to November could affect budget vote.

In accordance with S-3148, the law recently passed by the New Jersey Legislature and signed by Governor Chris Christie, the Berkeley Heights Board of Education will discuss and consider a proposed Resolution at its February 9th public meeting which would move the election of school board members in Berkeley Heights to the general election date in November.

If the election of board members is moved to November, there would no longer be a vote on the school district budget so long as the budget was within the 2% tax cap limit currently required by law.  If the budget needed a tax increase greater than the cap, there would be a public question on the November ballot.

The Board of Education welcomes and encourages public comments on this proposed Resolution and change in the school election process, which would be in effect immediately for a minimum of four (4) years if approved at this time.

The public portion of the Board meeting on February 9th will begin at 8:00 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of Columbia Middle School, 345 Plainfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights.

Official Board action on this Resolution may be taken at the February 9th meeting.  Additional information about this potential change in school elections can be found on the school district web-site, www.bhpsnj.org.
