Mountainside BOE Reminds Residents to Vote and Corrects Budget Mailer

Board Honors Student Accomplishment

At the last meeting scheduled before the elections, the Mountainside Board of Education  encouraged residents to vote today in the board and budget elections from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Borough Hall, Community Presbyterian Church and Deerfield School.

Chief School Administrator Dr. Jeanette Baubles took the opportunity to fill in a blank on the budget letter that was mailed to the community on the week of April 11th, citing a publishing issue as the source of the error. On page 2 of the budget letter, the bottom pie-chart was missing the “Reserves/Fund Balances” label. This portion equates to $770,053. A corrected version of the mailer is available on the district website (www.mountainsideschools.org).

Also, the board honored students for a variety of accomplishments. Fourth grade students performed a mock-trial for the board, and second grade spelling bee winners were acknowledged, along with an accomplished seventh grade writer. As well, the results of the Jump Rope for Heart fund raiser were announced.

Under the supervision of Mrs. Jenks, the fourth grade Student Enrichment Program Mock Trial was selected as an honorable mention by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation and will perform their trial at the New Jersey State Bar Foundation Law Fair on Monday, May 2nd.

The fourth graders were required to write the trial, which was entitled “Roller-coaster Rampage” and questioned negligence and personal injury at an amusement park.

For the second year in a row, seventh grade student Frances Hisgen received an honorable mention in the Letters About Literature contest, run by the New Jersey Center of the Book and the Library of Congress. Hisgen’s letter to author Neil Shusterman was selected out of 2,500 contest entries. Hisgen will go to Princeton University on May 11th to receive the honor.

“Great things are happening in the Mountainside school district,” said board member Carolyn Williams, congratulating all the students.

Additionally, Beechwood physical education instructor Ms. Weiss announced the results of the Jump Rope for Heart program, which raised $8,151.33 for the American Heart Association. Weiss thanked the 82 parent volunteers, faculty and the Mountainside Education Foundation for their contributions to the day.

Finally, the board also congratulated the winners of the Beechwood School second grade spelling bee. Claudia Schneider took first place in the contest, with Hayden Sobel taking second place.
