TryCAN Offers Study Skills Workshop for Students with Special Needs

TryCAN, a collaboration between Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Summit and other communities, is offering two Study Skills Workshops on Wednesdays this Fall.

There is still time for youth with special learning needs to register for a unique class being offered by the TryCAN program.

Study Skills Workshop is designed to help students in grades 6-9 learn to help them handle school requirements more effectively, including organization, work planning, note taking, assignment/project attack strategies and more.

Session 1 will tackle organization skills, including maintaining planners/agendas, managing your backpack, study tips, time management, note taking and test preparation.

Session 2 will continue with certain Session 1 topics and add writing strategies, advanced note taking, memory building and other strategies for test taking.

The sessions will be hands on and students will be asked to bring in their binders, backpacks, a textbook and planners/agendas to apply strategies immediately and generalize skills.

This class will be extremely valuable to students adjusting to the organization and work requirements of the middle school years.

The classes will be held on Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 pm.

Session 1, which costs $80, runs from Oct. 3 through Oct. 24, and Session 2, which costs $100, runs from Nov. 7 through Dec. 5.

TryCAN, a collaboration between Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Summit and other local communities, offers an array of recreation programs for youth with special needs or those who need special accommodation. There are no nonresident fees involved and all are welcome.

Call the Summit Community Center at (908) 277-2932 with questions or to register, or stop by the Center (100 Morris Ave.) to register in person.
