Deerfield School Retires Jersey of B.J. Giannone at Packed Gymnasium

Former student-athlete, who died last week, remembered at half-time of basketball doubleheader.

Deerfield School in Mountainside held their annual Spirit Night on Thursday, where both the boys' and girls' middle school teams were in action in front of a packed gymnasium filled with students, family and friends.

But the event held much more meaning than who would win or lose.

It was a night to honor and remember one of their own -- former student-athlete B.J. Giannone -- whose untimely passing last week stunned the close-knit community.

Giannone died last week from cardiac arrest after competing in a swim meet for St. Peter's Prep High School.

Giannone, who wore number 24 during his middle school playing days, was honored with the retirement of his Deerfield School basketball jersey, which was hung below the score board in the gym. Mayor Paul Mirabelli was the announcer throughout the annual event.
