JCC MetroWest To Hold Tryouts for 2012 JCC Maccabi Games

Jewish teens ages 13-16 (as of 7/31/12) who are interested in participating in the JCC Maccabi Games 2012 will have an opportunity to participate in the following sports: Boys Baseball, Boys Basketball, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Boys & Girls Swimming, and Boys & Girls Tennis. JCC MetroWest will take a delegation to the Games for one week in August. Tryouts begin in December. Tryout information, including dates, times, and locations, will be posted on the JCC website (www.jccmetrowest.org/maccabi) in November.

The JCC Maccabi Games can be called the Olympics for Jewish teens, but they serve a larger purpose than athletic competition.  The Maccabi Games promote community involvement, teamwork, and pride in being Jewish.  Visiting athletes enjoy "home hospitality," representing the extended Jewish family and the value of welcoming the stranger.  The Maccabi experience includes “Days of Caring and Sharing,” when athletes join local community organizations for volunteer work. Past “Days of Caring and Sharing” activities have included building homes for the poor, holding carnivals for handicapped children, cleaning empty parks, and packaging food to be given to the hungry.  The purpose is to teach tikkun olam (repairing the world), encouraging these young people to incorporate these values into their daily lives.

Athletes can try out for more than one sport.  Advance registration for tryouts is not necessary.  For more information, contact Sherri Feldscher at 973-530-3425 (sfeldscher@jccmetrowest.org).
