New Providence Dominates Roselle Park in Home Basketball Opener

The Pioneers defeated Roselle Park last night 63-30 and look ahead to next Monday's game at Millburn.

The boys varsity basketball team outscored Roselle Park by 25 points in the first half and went on to win the game 63-30 at last night's home opener.

As New Providence Head Coach Art Cattano put it, "The whole team played well, and was unselfish" against Roselle Park (now 2-1).

Answering the crowd's high hopes, senior center Jack Cole scored slam dunks in the second and third quarters, scoring sixteen of the Pioneers' 63 points, now with a record of 2-0. While defending, Cole knocked down a 2-point shot from Roselle Park's Antonucci. The crowd went wild at hearing the sound of Cole's hand smacking down the basketball.

Senior guard Joe Meyers had a great game, scoring eight out of the 35 points in the first half and scoring four out of the 28 points in the second half.

Junior forward Dave Barletta made six of the team's points in the second quarter and junior Seth Keller was two for two, making one three-point shot and one two-point shot.

Juniors Sam Stern and Scott Woodard scored three pointers, one for Stern and two for Woodard. Stern's shot came within the last ten seconds of the game, securing an easy win over Roselle Park.

Senior guard Vinny Fuschetto and senior forward Justin Singer stayed pretty quiet throughout the game, but made every shot they took.

Coach Cattano said that his team did a "nice job, and played well against a team (they) should play well against." The Pioneers didn't play sloppy and executed each of their shots beautifully, but Cattano said they need to improve on everything.

"Like I tell them all of the time, we can always shoot better," Cattano said.

Both sides of the gym were pushing and shoving, but it seemed as though only New Providence was getting called on them. At the end of the third quarter, New Providence had three fouls and Roselle Park had only one. But by the end of the second half, New Providence had eight fouls and Roselle Park had six.

New Providence's next game is on Monday, Dec. 27 at Millburn. Game time is 2 p.m.
