Sports Roundup: GL Girls Win Hoops Opener; Hockey Wins Again

Lady Highlanders beat Clark 35-31 on the court; Hockey team beats Dayton.

Coming off one of their finest seasons in program history, the Gov. Livingston girls' varsity basketball team is off to another good start, defeating Johnson Regional 35-31 Friday night in Clark.

Down 8-2 after the first period, the Lady Highlanders exploded for 19 points in the second stanza to take a 21-16 halftime lead. Despite being outscored 8-4 in a low-scoring fourth quarter, GL held on for the victory with Erin Ferguson pouring in 10 points and Alyssa Polimeni 9 points and 8 rebounds in a balanced effort.

Hockey: Highlanders varsity hockey team won their second straight game with a 5-0 victory over Dayton Friday night.

Eric Bland scored at the 9:03 mark of the first to give GL a lead they would never relinquish.Jake Niemala scored in the second off an assist by Drew Miller to make it 2-0 after two periods.

GL put the icing on the cake in the third with three goals, with Bland scoring his second of the game at the 11:40 mark, with Miller and Frank Servello assisting.

Miller then scored at the 8:20 mark before Miller and Niemala assisted on Servello's goal, the fifth and final tally coming with 4:15 left.

Jonathan LaBella saved 14 shots in the victory which improved GL's record to 2-2.
