Faith Lutheran Church Collects $19K of Food for Local Families in Need

Volunteers prepared 175 boxes of food for local families, while the remaining 285 boxes were delivered to StarFish Pantry in Plainfield.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, one hundred five volunteers gathered at in New Providence to sort and pack $19,000 of canned and packaged food, designated for the needy. 

More than ninety of the volunteers were members of Faith. The food had been collected by cub scout troops of New Providence.

The volunteers prepared 175 boxes of food for thirty-eight local families, most of whom live in New Providence.  The boxes were accompanied by turkeys, collected by , and pies baked by the home economics class at .  The boxes were distributed to the local residents by the New Providence Community Service Association.

The remaining 285 boxes were delivered by Faith Lutheran Church to StarFish Pantry, a combined Jewish/Christian organization in Plainfield, which provides emergency aid to about 9,000 people in that area, two-thirds of whom are children.  Although the resources of the Pantry had almost been depleted, the new food will meet the needs of the Pantry throughout the winter and early spring.

Cheryl Bock of Faith Lutheran and New Providence was the chairperson of the Fall Food Drive. This is the eleventh consecutive year that Ms. Bock has fulfilled this significant responsibility.
