YMCA Celebrates 125 Years of Serving the Community

Annual celebration honors supporters, volunteers.

The  celebrated 125 years of service to the community by honoring several volunteers, supporters and members in an annual ceremony held at  Monday night.

John A. Reid, Jr., a retired banker, youth soccer coach and Chair of the YMCA Board of Trustees, was awarded the  2011 Stuart Reed Memorial Award in recognition of his strong and continuing commitment to youth development and the greater Summit community. The annual award has been given since 1951 to those who exemplify the former Summit Area YMCA's General Secretary Shuart Reed's commitment to the betterment of the community.

Governor Livingston High School senior Tatiana LaSasso was chosen as the Summit Area YMCA 2011 Youth of the Year for her years of volunteer service as a summer camp counselor and after school program coordinator, working with kids at the Berkeley Heights YMCA.

Special recognition was also given to four outstanding Volunteers of the Year for their time, effort and overall contributions to their local YMCA.

  • Mariano Blanco, Springfield YMCA
  • Mary Weldon, Summit YMCA
  • Alyson Strasser, The Learning Circle YMCA

Tia Sargent, the Summit Area YMCA's community development director opened the evenings activities with a video overview of the YMCA Achievers Program, which provides career counseling and mentorship opportunities for local youth. Two graduates from this years program, Janeisha Allen and Daniela Rodriguez  were recognized for their participation.
