New Providence Downs Union Catholic 10-0

The Pioneers were led by starter Cassandra Squeri who surrendered only four hits to the Vikings.

With their Union County Championship finals matchup against Governor Livingston on deck, Wednesday’s matchup against Union Catholic loomed as a trap game for New Providence. There would be no let down in this one though as Cassandra Squeri (3-4, 2B, RBI) led the Pioneers to a 10-0 victory over the Vikings. “This game was great for us to get our confidence up,” Squeri said. “It was great for our hitting especially since we have had to work inside a lot.” The Pioneers bats were hot from the outset, as the home team put across four runs in the first stanza.  Jenna Madden led off the game with a double, one of three in the inning. Kelsey Quinn (2-4, 2B, RBI) Amelia Ekert (2-3, RBI) and Kaylin Ricciardi (2-3, 2B, RBI) all picked up RBIs in the …

Letter to Editor: Mirabella Stresses Support for Veterans

Union County Freeholder chair asks all residents to commemorate Memorial Day by connecting with U.S. Military veterans.

As Memorial Day approaches, our thoughts naturally turn to the sacrifices that have been made by Union County residents while serving in the U.S. military. Each year on this day, thousands of Union County residents from all walks of life, including my colleagues on the Freeholder Board and many County employees, join in commemorative ceremonies and activities to keep the memory of the deceased alive in our hearts. One of Union County’s long-running traditions is the distribution of tens of thousands of American flags to veterans’ groups and civic organizations like the Boy Scouts. Members of these groups fan out across the cemeteries of Union County each Memorial Day to ensure that every veteran’s grave is visited, recognized and honored. …

Booker, Christie Ham It Up for Video

Mayor and governor have fun with their images

Just because they're the state's two most prominent politicians doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humor. The office of Gov. Chris Christie yesterday released a lighthearted video co-starring Newark Mayor Cory Booker as a peripatetic go-to guy, riffing off his now national-scale image as a man of action following his rescue of a neighbor from a burning building several weeks ago. As the Democratic mayor of the state's largest city is depicted doing everything from coming up with a spare guitar for Bruce Springsteen to catching a falling baby, a faux-frustrated Christie hisses "Booker!" The video was produced for the New Jersey Press Association's Legislative Correspondent's Club show. Click on the video above to see the Cory and Chris…
