NP Police Department Receives CAU's Citizen of the Year Award

Community Access Unlimited, an organization that supports people with special needs in our community, honored the department for their service during the October snowstorm.

Community Access Unlimited (CAU), a human services agency that supports people with special needs, presented the New Providence Police Department with the 2012 Citizen of the Year Award for their service and commitment during the October 2011 snowstorm.   When the snowstorm left the CAU program without power for almost a week, the New Providence Police Department made sure that their members were warm and safe. NP Police Release Sketch of Suspect From Strong Armed Robbery

Suspect from burglary at New Providence Apartment on May 5 described as dark skinned Hispanic or Indian male, 5'7", 25 to 35 years old, scruffy facial hair, medium build.

New Providence Police released a composite sketch of the suspect from a reported strong armed robbery that occurred last Saturday, May 5 at 11 p.m. at a garden apartment complex, located 851 Springfield Avenue on the Summit border.  The suspect is described as a dark skinned Hispanic or Indian male approximately 5'7", between 25 to 35 years old with scruffy facial hair and a medium build. The victim indicated he was wearing a black dew-rag with a twisted knot on top, black sweatshirt with a white stripe on the sleeves, and light colored jeans. The victim reported that on Saturday night, she went outside to close her car windows because it began to rain. When she returned to her apartment, she noticed mud on the floor. After she walked a …

Scotch Plains Woman Critical in Mountainside Car Accident

The 47-year-old woman's car left Route 22 and crashed into a tree shortly before 10:20 p.m.

A Scotch Plains woman was critically injured when her car ran off Route 22 in Mountainside last night and hit a tree. Carol Ganczewski, age 47, crashed her 2007 Toyota Camry shortly before 10:20 p.m. Wednesday night and was trapped in the vehicle, according to the Mountainside Police Department. She was traveling eastbound on 22 shortly before Parkway street (not the GSP). The Mountainside Fire Department extricated Ganczewski from the vehicle. She was then flown by helicopter to University Hospital in Newark where she is currently listed as in critical condition.   The Mountainside Police Department serious accident investigation unit is currently investigating the circumstances of the accident and ask that anyone who may have witnessed …

Police, Mental-Health Officials Get Crisis Training

Union County recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month by creating Crisis Intervention Teams to handle calls involving mentally challenged people.

The following article was provided by the Union County Prosecutor's Office. On a recent day in Scotch Plains, it looked like a wrestling match or a judo class was underway at the John H. Stamler Police Academy. In fact, it was the latest in law-enforcement training.   Union County law-enforcement and mental-health professionals have joined forces to implement Crisis Intervention Team training. Known as CIT, this 40-hour joint training teaches police and mental health workers to respond to mental health calls using verbal de-escalation skills and less than lethal force. Initiated by Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow, Union County has held four CIT classes since March 2011 with two more planned for June and October. Class size is limited to …

VIDEO: Bear Goes to Town Hall in Union, Was Safely Tranquilized and Removed

A bear first spotted on Chestnut Street yesterday reappeared this morning in a tree behind town hall.

Town hall employees in Union had a special visitor as they arrived to work this morning: an 18-month-old, 187-pound male black bear had climbed a tree behind the building and settled in. The bear was previously spotted by a resident on Chestnut Street yesterday, but when police arrived, the bear had disappeared. (Though initial reports stated the bear was sighted near Connecticut Farms Church Nursery School, police told Patch yesterday that the bear was actually in a resident's yard and not near the school.) But today the bear came out of hiding once again, spotted by employees around 8:30 a.m. Police kept an eye on the bear while waiting for a bear rescue team, according to Union Township Media Technician Natalie DaSilva. Police Still Investigating Strong Armed Robbery at NP Garden Apartment

Victim freed herself, but sustained minor injuries. Intruder described as a 5'7" dark skinned male, 20 to 30 years old. Residents encouraged to call New Providence Police with any information about burglary.

New Providence Police Officers responded to a report on Saturday at 11 p.m. that a burglary had just occurred at a garden apartment complex, located at 851 Springfield Avenue on the Summit border. Upon their arrival, the victim advised the officers that she had gone out to the parking lot to close her car windows because it had begun raining. When the victim returned to her apartment, an unknown intruder lunged at her throwing her to the floor and a struggle ensued. The victim reported she was able to free herself from the assailant's grasp, run out her door and began banging on her neighbor's door, who called 9-1-1. Motorcyclist Leads NP Police On Pursuit Through Chatham

The following information was provided by the New Providence Police Department.

The driver of a white Yamaha motorcycle led New Providence police on a short pursuit through the borough and into Chatham on Friday, April 20 around 7:30 p.m. Sergeant Daniel Henn attempted to stop the motorcycle on Passaic Street for an equipment violation. The registration displayed on the motorcycle was different from the motorcycle being operated.  The motorcycle accelerated away from Henn and lead him on a brief pursuit onto River Road into Chatham Township that ended at the dead end of Commerce Street in Chatham Borough.  The motorcycle was abandoned by the operator, who fled by foot.   Officers from Chatham Borough, Chatham Township, Summit and the Morris County Sheriffs Department assisted in the search of the suspect.  The …

NP Police: 14-Year-Old Stole Parents' Vehicle

The following arrest information was provided by the New Providence Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

  Patrols responded to Diane Court last Friday on a report of a stolen motor vehicle.  During the investigation it was determined that the owner’s 14-year-old son had taken the vehicle.  The case has been forwarded to the detective bureau. In other police news, April 20 - 29: 4-20-2012 – Corporal Jason Labaska charged Pamela Lee, 27, of Hoboken with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended driver’s license, no insurance, a cracked windshield and obstructed license plates.  The charges stem from a motor vehicle stop on Diamond Hill Road. 4-20-2012 – After a lengthy investigation, Detectives Bubb and Drown charged Vaughanetta Torrence, 29, of Newark with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft and one count of credit card theft.  The …

NP Police Charge Juvenile, Arrest Adult For Possession of Marijuana

The following information was obtained directly from the New Providence Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Cpl. Chad Wilson charged a 17-year-old juvenile male with possession of a controlled dangerous substance on Saturday, April 21. This charge stems from Wilson's investigation of the smell of marijuana coming from the interior of a motor vehicle during a traffic stop for a moving violation on Passaic Street.  On April 29, police responded to the parking lot of Spring Floral Drive on a report from a resident of a group of individuals smoking marijuana in a motor vehicle.  After an investigation, Sgt. Robert Carroll arrested a passenger in the vehicle, David Difede, 18, of Summit with possession of a controlled dangerous substance.  He was released with a pending a municipal court date.

Black Bear Sighted Near Berkeley Heights Elementary School

In a written statement, Chief Mathis said the bear did not cause any immediate threats to residents and it moved away from the school area before students were dismissed.

  A Black Bear was spotted around 2 p.m. today near the Thomas P. Hughes Elementary School, located at 446 Snyder Avenue, which caused a degree of concern. The Board of Education Honeywell Alert system was utilized to notify all parents to the presence of this animal, said Police Chief Michael P. Mathis in a written statement. At no time did the bear impose any immediate threat and it had moved away from the area prior to student dismissal, Mathis stated. Police officers monitored its movements until it disappeared into a wooded area near Watchung Way around 4:30 p.m. Township residents are encouraged to contact the Berkeley Heights Police Department at (908) 464-1111 whenever a bear is observed along a roadway or in a residential area. …
