NJ TRANSIT continues to adjust and refine its emergency trans-Hudson transportation plan to most efficiently match the available bus, rail and ferry resources with the needs of state citizens. NJ TRANSIT will expand the free emergency shuttle bus/ferry service and shuttle bus to rail service to improve the Trans-Hudson commute for the agency’s Gladstone Branch customers along the Morris & Essex Lines. Starting Monday, November 19, new bus shuttle-to-ferry service and bus shuttle-to-train service will operate from selected stations along the Gladstone Branch of the Morris & Essex Lines to provide an alternate travel option for customers impacted by the ongoing suspension of Gladstone Branch train service. Update: Nov. 2, 5a.m. Local public transportation options are crawling back with NJ Transit bus service leading the way. The 70 bus that passes through Summit is back up, however the the Morris & Essex line that serves Downtown Summit is still suspended. The Holland Tunnel is reopening on Friday, but with limited bus-only service. Local airports are nearly fully operational. Read the advisorie's from NJT and Port Authority, below. NJ Transit is kicking off the unofficial start of summer with “early getaway” rail and bus service on today, May 25, for the benefit of customers leaving work early for the Memorial Day holiday weekend. On Friday, May 25, extra outbound trains will operate on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex, and Port Jervis lines starting at approximately 1 p.m. Extra buses will operate from the Port Authority Bus Terminal on more than two dozen bus routes starting around noon. On Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, trains will operate on a weekend/major holiday schedule on all lines. Bus schedules vary by route. Safety initiative comes after death of three teenagers in October
A variety of safety measures will sweep New Jersey Transit lines within the next year or so, transportation officials announced Wednesday, in an effort to reduce the number of accidental train deaths across the state. The safety improvements, which include improved signage, warning systems and educational programs, are the result of a three-month study by the Safety Along Railroads Leadership Oversight Committee, formed in wake of the deaths of three teenagers by New Jersey Transit trains last October.
