Giants Pay Tribute to Victims of Newtown Shooting

Families, friends of those killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School usher team onto field.

NORTH JERSEY — More than 200 students from Sandy Hook Elementary School were among 400 people from Newtown, Conn., who formed a tunnel for New York Giants players to run through as they took the field Sunday for their final home game of the 2012 season. A little more than two weeks after a 20-year-old gunman stormed into the Connecticut elementary school and killed 26 people, including 20 children, families, classmates and neighbors of the dead were bused to MetLife Stadium and given tickets to the contest by the Giants. New Providence Reacts To Newtown, CT Elementary School Shooting

Schools are monitoring students carefully following the tragic elementary school shooting in Connecticut, while the borough looks for a way to remember the 26 victims.

The horrific shooting that claimed the lives of 20 elementary school children and six adults in Connecticut on Friday continues to affect communities near and far, including New Providence. On Monday, New Providence School District administrators and faculty monitored students carefully while reassuring parents of the districts’ safety procedures. At the same time, borough officials began looking for a way to symbolically remember the lives lost in this unspeakable tragedy. New Providence Schools Guidance counselors, psychologists and social workers are on staff throughout the district, said Superintendent David Miceli, and with any tragedy, students always have the opportunity to meet with any of them. Patch Writer's Mother-In-Law Killed in CT School Shootings

Mary Sherlach, the mother-in-law of Patch writer Eric Schwartz, was among 27 people killed in the second-deadliest school shooting in American history.

The deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, claimed the life of a Patch writer's family member.  Mary Sherlach, the school's psychologist, was among 26 people, including 20 children, who died when a gunman opened fire at the school Friday morning. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also died in the rampage.  Sherlach was the mother-in-law of Deptford resident Eric Schwartz, a longtime Patch freelancer who covers high school sports in South Jersey.  Sherlach, 56, lived in Trumbull, CT. Schwartz and his wife, Maura, arrived in Connecticut on Friday evening to be with their family.
