Union County Year In Review: The Biggest News Events

In the last few months alone, our town and surrounding areas were hit by an Earthquake, Irene, and a freak October snowstorm. Here, we recap those and other stories from 2011.

April 3, 2011 — House Fire at Runnymede Parkway "Under Control," Says Chief The cause of a residential fire that began in the back of a two-story home at 176 Runnymede Parkway on Sunday, April 3 is still under investigation. While no injuries were reported, the house is uninhabitable, at least for the evening, said New Providence Fire Chief Ralph Parlapiano, who received the call at 4:52 p.m.  April 15, 2011 — Home Fire Causes Significant Smoke Damage A gas leak triggered a fire in a New Providence home at approximately 3:30 p.m., according to New Providence fire officials. The flames were under control by 4 p.m. New Providence Fire Chief Ralph Parlapiano said the fire was caused by a gas leak in the kitchen of the home at 105 Madison Ave…

Union County Year in Review: 2011's Most Inspiring Stories

Union County residents do everything they can to help those in need. This year, despite illness, weather and economic woes, many found ways to come together and lend a helping hand.

  Whether moved by 9/11, passionate about helping friends in need or lending support to neighbors who lost much after Hurricane Irene, Union County residents inspired each other this year. Read on to find out how 2011 was a year of thankfulness and giving back.   Feb. 21, 2011: Comedy Night Organized for Pfeiffer Fund Throughout the year, many volunteered to raise funds to benefit Carly Pfeiffer, the daughter of third generation Westfield firefighter Jim Pfeiffer, who died in August 2010.  In February, a group of Roosevelt Intermediate School teachers worked together to help organize a comedy night to benefit Pfeifer. New Providence Year In Review: The Most Inspirational Stories

Last year, while there was a lot of news surrounding our borough, there were a few stories that stood out from the crowd.

Nick Carone In November of 2010, longtime New Providence resident Nick (Nicola) Carone was diagnosed with lung cancer. Since Carone’s diagnosis, Debbie Johnston and her husband, Jimmy, who is the Director of the New Providence Department of Public Works, were firsthand observers of the challenges faced by the Carone family, not the least of which had been the financial implications of the illness. As a result, two spaghetti dinners were held in town to raise funds for the Carone family during the last weekend in April and first weekend in May. The Johnston family hosted one dinner, while the other dinner was coordinated by Johnston’s sister-in-law, Betty Bechberger, who serves on the board for the New Providence Care and Concern Foundation…

New Providence Year in Review: The Biggest Sports Stories

We take a look back at the year in New Providence High School Sports.

January 16, 2011- Terrezza, Troutman Take Individual Titles At Pioneer Wrestling Tourney Two Pioneers wrestlers took first place at the second annual Pioneer Classic Wrestling Tournament. Terrezza and Troutman became the first two New Providence wrestlers to take first place in the tournament’s short history. January 24, 2011- Troutman Takes Down Longtime Opponent at County Wrestling Tourney New Providence senior Zach Troutman kept his undefeated season alive and earned the Union County Tournament Championship against rival Austin Frank of Linden who also entered the match with an undefeated record. May 22, 2011 — Elefante Appreciates Its Customers Students and customers gathered at Elefante Music in New Providence to celebrate the learning and appreciation of music. June 13, 2011 — First Share NJ 5K Exceeds $400K Fundraising Goal More than 3,000 people participated in the NJ Sharing Network Foundation's first 5K run/walk, raising $428,000 and exceeding the fundraising goal.
