Union County Week In Review: Police Investigate Child Luring; Target Expansion Opens

Here's a roundup of some of the top stories throughout Union County during the week of Oct. 14-20.

Berkeley Heights Area Leaders to Honor John Pullara, Berkeley Heights Eagle Scout Community leaders, businessmen and Scouters will join together to honor Eagle Scout John Pullara on Oct. 24. John will be receiving the Outstanding Eagle Scout Award in recognition for his dedication to his community and for exemplifying the values of the Boy Scouts of America. Two Charged With Unlawful Possession of Weapon in Berkeley Heights On Oct. 11, Ptl. Ron Desimoni arrested Raheim Williams, 36, of Chambersburg PA, and Jamar Carter, 30, of Manhattan, NY. The Week That Was in Union County — Clark Death a Homicide, Teen Slain in Linden

Countywide The Union County Homicide Task Force has been continuing work on the investigation into the death of Vera Pecoraro while also working two other active homicide investigations in the county – the shooting death of a Linden teen and the stabbing of a 17-year-old during a large fight in Rahway. Clark Matthew Dorsi, lawyer for Michael and Theodore Pecoraro, says the two are fully cooperating with the investigation into their mother's homicide. Vera Pecoraro was found with her throat slit on Saturday at her home on Rolling Hill Way in Clark. Police say there was no sign of forced entry into the home and they believe she knew her attacker. Week in Review: Liquor Licenses, ShopRite Cup, GLHS Parking Issues

Every high school in America dreams of the opportunity to produce a championship team in at least one of its sports, and New Providence High School is not exception. At the New Providence Board of Education meeting Thursday night, Superintendent David Miceli announced that the high school had moved beyond the dream phase into reality, winning the 9th Annual Group I ShopRite Cup Championship. To earn this award, schools must accumulate points based on their performance in championship play in 32 individual sports sanctioned by the NJSIAA. Fall, winter and spring sports are all included. Schools receive points for finishing first, second, third and fourth in group state championships. To achieve its championship ranking, New Providence …

The Week That Was in Union County — 4-Alarm Fire, Child Dies in Six-Story Fall

Major stories in Union County towns covered by Patch for the week of June 18-24, 2012.

Countywide West Nile virus was detected in mosquito pools in three towns: Summit, Cranford and Clark. Officials detailed efforts to combat the virus — found in four pools out of 63 tested throughout the county — and shared tips for residents. Clark Health Officer Nancy Raymond says the finding is not especially alarming and that there have been positive tests in the township in previous years. Cranford Firefighters from Cranford and surrounding towns battled a 4-alarm fire in a Cranford residence on Sunday afternoon through evening. See the video here. A New Providence boy tragically died this past Saturday night from injuries sustained after a six-story fall from a Connecticut apartment building window. Alex Wu, an 8-year-old student at Salt Brook Elementary School, was reportedly visiting relatives with his family at Rippowam Manor, a 10-story apartment building located in Stamford, CT. Salt Brook Elementary School sent a letter to all parents on Monday about Alex's death, asking parents to discuss this tragedy with their children and informing parents that counselors would be at the school each day until Wednesday, which was the last day of school, to help students cope with the loss of their classmate. Week in Review: Primary Election, Olympic Trials, Relay For Life

Here's the top news in Berkeley Heights, Mountainside and New Providence this week.

It was a fairly quiet primary night in Union County on Tuesday, June 5, but there are some results to report.  Berkeley Heights Craig S. Pastore, a Republican and the current Berkeley Heights Town Council Vice President who is running for his second term on council, received 566 votes, or 49.65 percent of the vote. Council President Kevin Hall, also a Republican, is running for his second term on council and received 570 votes, or 50 percent of the vote. Democrat Michael Simon, who is seeking his first term on Council, received 167 votes, or 88.36 percent of the total vote. He is a former Assistant US Attorney with the Department of Homeland Security, who is now in private practice.  There were also 22 “personal choice” votes, or 11.64 …

Relay For Life of Berkeley Heights, Mountainside, New Providence, and Summit is pulling out all the stops for this year’s event, which will take place at Governor Livingston High School from 3 p.m. on June 2 to 7 a.m. on June 3. Each year gets bigger and better, and this year is no exception. While during every Relay, participants enjoy food they bring and some they order in or purchase from other teams, this year event planners have a new feature: a food court! Before and during the event, vendors from around the community will be on-site selling, and in some cases giving, food and beverages to attendees. Newsweek HS Rankings, Death in Clark — Tops in Union County News This Week

Here's what made news around the county this past week.

Each week, Patch takes a look back at the news in Union County for the past week. Countywide Hot on the heals of the U.S. News & World Report rankings, Newsweek released its list of the best public high schools in the country, and Union County high schools did quite well. New Providence ranked 224 and Governor Livingston High came in at 498 out of the 1,000 schools that made the grade. Elsewhere around Union County's public schools, Elizabeth High School ranked 217, Summit ranked 251, Cranford ranked 279, Westfield High ranked 352, Jonathan Dayton ranked 584, A.L. Johnson ranked 820 and Scotch Plains/Fanwood ranked 769. Clark Matthew Kent, a 2007 Arthur L. Johnson graduate, was found dead at his home on Hawthorne Drive in Clark on Thursday…

Week in Review: Bruno's Breakfast, Softball UCT Final, Liquor Timeline

Here's the top news in Berkeley Heights, Mountainside and New Providence this week.

Delis are a North Jersey staple, a haven for a quick and tasty breakfast, overstuffed sandwiches, sumptuous side dishes and lots of chatter. Everyone has their favorite, either for the food or the connection. This week, we asked you to vote for yours. Mountainside Delicatessen clinched the vote in Mountainside with 100 percent of the vote. In Berkeley Heights, The Sub Zone was voted the favorite, receiving 50 percent of the vote, followed by Goodman's Restaurant & Deli, which received 45 percent of the vote.
