JCP&L To Trim Trees in Summit, New Providence, Berkeley Heights

If you see more JCP&L trucks in the area, don't be surprised. The company will be trimming vegetation along the roadways. Affected residents will be notified in advance.

JCP&L will be paying a visit to Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights in the coming weeks as a part of the company's $24 million 2013 vegetation management program. The company successfully inspected and trimmed trees along nearly 4,000 miles of lines across its system in 2012, according to a JCP&L press release. To help maintain safe and reliable electric service, JCP&L regularly trims trees and conducts vegetation management work along its electric distribution lines on a four year cycle. “The vegetation management program is an important component of our annual investment in infrastructure to deliver reliable service to customers,” said Don Lynch, JCP&L president. “The severe weather events that our region has experienced over the…

New Providence, Summit Close In On Emergency Dispatch Center Agreement

New Providence and Summit are moving closer to a shared dispatch center, which would provide emergency police, fire and EMS services for residents in both communities. Last week, New Providence Council approved a resolution and an ordinance to move forward with this shared service. The identical resolution and ordinance is on the Summit Common Council’s agenda for their meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. If approved, this agreement will lay the groundwork for how both towns will bring the proposed “New Providence & Summit Emergency Services Dispatch Center” to fruition. NJT To Test Gladstone Branch Tracks of Morris & Essex Line This Friday

NJ Transit will provide update about resumption of service after test runs on Friday. Test trains will ensure systems are operating as intended, remove rust build-up.

NJ TRANSIT announced on Wednesday that repairs to the Gladstone Branch of the Morris & Essex Lines will be completed on Friday, Nov. 30, with test trains scheduled to begin operations at that time.  NJ TRANSIT will provide an update that day regarding the expected resumption of service.  “While every NJ TRANSIT rail line sustained damage as a result of Sandy’s wrath, the Gladstone line was particularly hard-hit, with the heavy damage and unique challenges making repairs more timely and more difficult,” said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director James Weinstein. “I would again thank our customers for their patience and understanding during this difficult time.” The test trains are needed to ensure all of the systems are operating as intended and to…

LWV To Host Stephanie Noble of M80 at New Providence Memorial Library

Noble, the Director of Account Management at M80, a social media agency, will speak about how social media influences elections.

The League of Women Voters of Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit is hosting Stephanie Noble, a Director of Account Management at M80, a social media agency on Wednesday, Nov. 14.  Social media is expanding information, knowledge and involvement. Ms. Noble will speak about “How Social Media Influences Elections.” The program will be held at the New Providence Memorial Library on Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited. Ms. Noble has built an impressive history in digital media marketing and social media analysis. Late Fall Programs in Summit Now Registering Youth With Special Needs

Several programs are now being offered this fall by the Summit Community Programs and coordinated by TryCAN.

Youth with special needs and those who could use just a little help and encouragement are welcome to now register for several programs being offered again this fall by the Summit Community Programs and coordinated by TryCAN.   Our experienced coaches and instructors are excited to return to help our youth develop skills that may allow them to pursue a sport or activity further or simply provide them with a meaningful recreation experience.  These popular and affordable classes, open to both residents and non-residents, also use the assistance of trained teen Peer Mentors from local middle and high schools to help participants fully participate in the classes, learn and have fun. We have a full schedule of programs, each running 4 - 6 weeks…

TryCAN Offers Study Skills Workshop for Students with Special Needs

TryCAN, a collaboration between Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Summit and other communities, is offering two Study Skills Workshops on Wednesdays this Fall.

There is still time for youth with special learning needs to register for a unique class being offered by the TryCAN program.   Study Skills Workshop is designed to help students in grades 6-9 learn to help them handle school requirements more effectively, including organization, work planning, note taking, assignment/project attack strategies and more.   Session 1 will tackle organization skills, including maintaining planners/agendas, managing your backpack, study tips, time management, note taking and test preparation.   Session 2 will continue with certain Session 1 topics and add writing strategies, advanced note taking, memory building and other strategies for test taking.
