Prepare For The Worst With Sandy, Hope For The Best, Be Your Best
As preparations are made for Sandy, remember your duty as citizens to extend your circle of care to encompass your neighbors in need of your assistance.
It was eerily about a year ago on Oct. 29 that a freak fall storm hit our area; felling trees and taking out power for several days throughout our area.
As we batten down the hatches to prepare for the onslaught of Sandy, we must remind ourselves of the random acts of thoughtfulness and kindness which will be needed from each of you over the coming days
Last year, we experienced a double dose of catastrophe with not only the Storm 10-29, but we had also just recovered from the remnants of Hurricane Irene. During this time, our community experienced the worst of conditions to hit our area, but also the best in terms of taking care of our neighbors in need. We will need these acts of concern once again as we get ready for Sandy.

Many of you have already fashioned your home bunkers. You’ve stocked up on batteries, water and other necessities as you brace for the storm’s impact. Many have tested and prepared their generators for back up, and have run extension cords throughout their homes to maintain light, sump pumps and other appliances.
While these precautions may sustain your individual households, I ask each of you to remember your duty as citizens to extend your circle of care to encompass the neighbors in your area who may not be as fortunate with planning, or as technically prepared as you may be. Check in on them today, especially the elderly to make sure they have adequate resources. If they don’t, invite them to share some of the generator power you plan to use, which they may not have. Simply extending an extension cord to them, may not seem like a big deal, but may make a huge difference for them. Welcome them into your home and extend your hospitality and shelter to them if needed. Be a good neighbor.

Storms such as Sandy have the capacity to cause a great amount of damage to our area and properties. While we prepare for the worst, hope for the best, but also put forth your personal best as a good person within your neighborhood and be prepared to be a hero for someone in need.
